Dog movies almost always want to make you cry. The ones that just want to make you smile are few and far between. That’s usually the case with pet centric flicks, which is good for emotion, but sometimes rough for animal lovers like yours truly. It’s nice on occasion to not go into a film with a canine companion and have to fret about an impending death. Luckily, one look at Patrick, the new dog centric comedy, and your heart will melt without ever reducing you to tears. It’s far from perfect, but it’s more than cute enough to be worthy of a recommendation.
The movie is a comedy about how a dog ends up leading a young woman to happiness. At the beginning, Sarah Francis (Beattie Edmondson) has a life that could charitably be called an absolute mess. After the death of her grandmother, for some reason it’s decided that it would be a good idea for her to have a pet. So, she’s given her grandmother’s spoiled pug Patrick in the will. Why would she do this? Well, for a while, it doesn’t seem to have a purpose. Slowly but surely, however, it seems like he may actually be the key to turning Sarah’s life around. There aren’t a lot of surprises here, but there are plenty of smiles, that’s for sure. Mandie Fletcher co-writes with Vanessa Davis and Paul de Vos, as well as handles the directing duties. Chris Goodger handles the cinematography, while the score is by Michael Price. Supporting players include Tom Bennett, Milanka Brooks, Bernard Cribbins, Peter Davison, Emilia Jones, Gemma Jones, Cherie Lunghi, Jennifer Saunders, Adrian Scarborough, Ed Skrein, and more.

This film is a lovely tribute to the impact that a dog can have on your life. To be sure, the cuteness of the pug goes a long way, but the overall tone is so charming that a smile ends up on your face for the vast majority of the running time. The pacing could have been a little bit better/tighter and the tone could have been slightly more consistent, but these are not at all major qualms. They just keep this one from becoming instantly iconic or anything. The pup in the title will certainly have his share of fans, but it will likely be only from a limited theatrical audience.
