Ready for more adventures and music from Disney? Still want to build a snow man? Hundreds of millions of dollars sure hope you do. Clearly, we’re talking about a Frozen sequel, which is coming later on in 2019. Frozen II, the hotly (no pun intended) follow up, is poised to be part of a record breaking year for the company. As the promotional machine begins to crank up, a new Trailer has been released for the flick. You can see the Trailer below, but before we get to that, a preview for the movie is in order. So, let us dive right in and discuss!
Obviously, this is a sequel to Frozen, the smash hit. Here is the synopsis from Disney: “Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In “Frozen 2,” she must hope they are enough. From the Academy Award®-winning team—directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, producer Peter Del Vecho and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—and featuring the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad, Walt Disney Animation Studios’” IMDb adds the following: “Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf are going far in the forest to learn the truth about an ancient mystery of their kingdom.” It sounds like an adventure is afoot. We’ll learn more soon, but obviously it’ll be centered around top notch visuals, terrific music, and the auditory performances of Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Jonathan Groff, and Idina Menzel. Directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee return to direct, with the screenplay being written by Allison Schroeder and Christophe Beck composing the score. Joining the cast this time around are Sterling K. Brown, Evan Rachel Wood, and more.
There’s not much to go on, plot wise here, but it does look like a gorgeously animated film. Of course, we should also expect some great new original songs from returning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Putting their words into the mouths of Bell, Gad, Groff, and especially Menzel was magical last time around, so it stands to reason that they should be a highlight once again this time. It does seem to be a movie with more of an action or adventure bent to it, but time will tell there. If so, it’ll be a new spin that could keep the franchise alive. That could be key too, as a third installment is all but guaranteed, especially if it proves to be an awards player once again. More on that next…
Oscar wise, Frozen II will likely be competing with a fellow Disney title in Pixar’s Toy Story 4 (my review of that one comes next week, but it’s a formidable contender) for Academy Award love. Look for the company to launch campaigns in Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay (for Schroeder), Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score (for Beck), and Best Original Song. The two animation titans will be competing up and down the line in these categories, so expect Disney/Pixar to plan accordingly. Toy Story 4 has got the goods, so we’ll just have to wait and see if this one does too. Both films are former Animated Feature champions, after all.
You can see the Frozen II Trailer next. Regardless of quality, this is going to make tons of money, hand over fist, for Disney. Luckily, what we’ve seen so far looks really good, so this could be shaping up to be a real great year for animation. Audiences won’t be seeing this one until the late fall, as it’s scheduled for release on November 22nd. Fans of the first one will be anxiously waiting this one, that’s for sure. It’ll be quite a wait, but for the moment, the new Trailer will have to tide you all over. Give it a look now and see what you think. Enjoy…
