It’s time for a brand spanking new look at Academy Award predictions, ladies and gents! With the Cannes Film Festival in the rearview mirror, a new crop to titles are up for potential nomination grabs. Of course, Quinten Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was the highest profile movie playing at Cannes, though new work from Terrence Malick and others could also compete for attention. They won’t necessarily be in play for Oscar voters when all is said and done, but right now, as blockbusters are on everyone’s mind here in the middle of June, they offer a potential refresher down the road.

For the most part, this is just a polish, with a more substantial update to come soon. Some of the below the line categories have been filled in, while Best Picture now lists 25 contenders in total. Next to come will be next in line listings for the technical categories, so look for that soon. Right now, we’re debating how Cannes flicks and baity trailers for things like Ad Astra and Ford vs. Ferrari might fare in 2019. Nothing is known right now, but it’s interesting to speculate. This update tinkers with some of what I’ve previously predicted, but a larger makeover is planned for next time.
